Hori Realising a Portable LCD Screen For PS3 Slim

April 9, 2010

We’ve seen portable LCD screens for games consoles before, allowing gamers to play their console games on the go — assuming they have a place to plug the system in. We haven’t seen anything like this for use with the PlayStation 3, although modder Ben Heckendorn did create a PS3 Slim laptop that allowed for a somewhat portable PS3. How useful or practical that, or an LCD screen that is fitted on top of a console, really is aside, the thought of being able to play your videogame console without being tethered to a TV set is pretty cool.

Videogame accessory manufacturer Hori is set to release the HP3-87 (via Engadget) next month, a new LCD screen that is made specifically for use with the PlayStation 3 Slim. The screen docks with the PS3 and can fold down when not in use. It’s officially licensed by Sony, and also works with the Torne TV tuner/DVR for PS3s that is only available in Japan. It sports a maximum resolution of 1366 x 768, a 7ms response time, and a 500:1 contrast ratio.

Hori’s new screen is currently only set for release in Japan, where it will be available on May 27 for 26,040 yen (about $277 USD). We’ll keep you posted if any word surfaces on an international release.
